MATCH REPORT:

It's over! It's all over! :grouphug: The 2009 Assault Anniversary Cup is done and dusted with the unstoppable Team.Wish emerging as eventual winners, leaving a trail of unhappy campers in their wake. They saw off Salva's fraggers to reach the semis, Met's sturdy backdef to earn a place in the finals, and XB's patchwork team of launchers, fraggers, sneakers and laggers to claim the championship. But did anyone expect them to win the final match in only ten maps?

There were various reasons why they did. Until Yako speaks we will never know the details of the first reason which can be summed up by the question: where the hell was Yako? No disrespect to Lenneth (who wasn't there either), but Yako was a first team pick for Team.XB, having played in all three of the previous matches and doing a pretty good job every time. The match was booked and agreed upon, so for not one but two of Team.XB's players to fail them is... well, it's enough to negatively affect the outcome of the match, whatever else it is. Maybe some day we'll learn what happened to make such a mockery of all the work and commitment that so many people had shown in order to make this cup work so well. Or perhaps not. What's important is that Team.XB had unfairly had the legs kicked out from underneath them even before the match had started and it's maybe understandable that they never managed to recover. To Team.Wish's credit, they dropped Toone pretty much until Pete arrived to make it 5v5, which they were fully entitled not to do, as Team.XB's problems were not theirs. The fact that they met with little difficulty even after Pete joined is pretty certainly only fair, because how cruel would it have been if the blues had gone on to win?

Anyway, what else contributed to such a strong win for Team.Wish? Themselves, for a start. Talk about strong play, fkin ell. The red team was a well-oiled frag machine all night long and their successes almost always followed simple run-and-shoot strategies. Launches were hit-and-miss but when it came to whipping out some guns and just powering towards the next objective Team.Wish could do little wrong, especially with the captain in near indestructible mode. Wish and Bn were also enjoying the lowest pings on the server and there was no-one on the opposition team who could match them.

Add to this Team.XB's almost constant defence vulnerability, occasionally puzzling def positions, lack of decent comms, inability to attack anything as a team late on in the match, low morale, and (it has to be said) massively bad luck, and it's hard to see how Wish's team could possibly have lost this. Not that the blues did nothing right; they were occasionally great to watch in action, especially since none of them gave up until the very last round, when it was clear they had been soundly beaten. Given half a chance, they were launching at least as well as the red team, every one of them was getting respectable frag counts, Pete did a fantastic job as a backup player - if he had been previously apathetic about the cup then it didn't show in his play. It's not even as though their defence was all that suspect in terms of positions; just that everyone kept dying :\ The reds' superior frag power had the blues dropping like flies at objectives but also made them reluctant to push out, leaving the reds often needing only one run to finish an obj and start on the next one. Comms were also understandably less than great, what with Pete playing his first match, Lucy with her usual problems and Yako not even being there, which all added up to players finally ignoring comms altogether and just pushing forward on their own on attack or failing to give proper warnings on defence.

But there's no point dwelling on who should have done what, or on the flames or arguments or finger pointing which inevitably arose during the match. The important thing is that Team.Wish did their part to make it a worthy final by dominating and winning it; while Team.XB did their part by fighting hard and refusing to roll over and hand their opponents the victory, even in the face of all their unexpected problems. We all wish we had gotten the final which this Cup deserved, but at least we got a final worth playing, worth watching and worth remembering. Thanks for playing, everyone

TEAM.WISH POSITIVES:

Since the Cup is now over and there's nothing to learn any more, I decided not to bother noting negatives. Just the good points.

Wish had yet another great game
The same players who had played well in previous rounds were no less effective in the final
All six of them managed to turn up
Played to their strengths - strong running, fragging, and simple launches which mostly worked
Defence layouts were almost always perfect

TEAM.X-BOMB POSITIVES:

XB fought really hard all night, even as map after map fell to the reds
Could have crumbled with the absence of Yako, a core team member, but didn't
Got off to a half decent start in Ballistic, though they couldn't keep it going
All played well as individuals, if not really as a team
Dodgily chose about the best possible player to bring in as backup :D

WARMUP: BRIDGE

MAP 1 - BALLISTIC

QUICK MAP REPORT:

Toone sat from the start of the round, allowing sneez to pull off an absolutely fantastic Lasers on only 9:59. The guy's a marvel. Playing 4v4, the reds pushed forward with sniper rifles boinging, until Wish had the Gate in the sack on 9:36, after watching od and NoMercy fall to the deck. The fact that XB was back at the Genny and Lucy was on the unused hill helped contribute to such an easy Gate. Next dirz began setting launches up the left cliff, on the nest side, and it was obvious that the nest was going to be Wish's favoured tactic at this point. It fell apart slightly when od and NoMercy worked together around the bunker to keep the nest from being breached, then suddenly Lucy and XB were under serious attack at the Genny, with XB saving four times in the space of a few seconds. Flak launches were being tried, someone got rockets, Wish even managed to breach the nest at one point, only to meet XB's :flack: once inside. Not long afterwards Wish and sneez took down the nest lasers and then timed their jumps perfectly to have Wish zapped and sneez fail entirely  However, on the next run Wish managed to grab rockets and send another two unzoomed rocket shots to the Genny on 7:10, just like he had done versus Met's team in the semis. Ironically, he thought he had got the objective but it turned out to be Bn sneaking around with a flak cannon. Owned! XB had done a good job adapting his defence to cover whatever the reds were trying, and it was some semi-decent backdef which allowed the blues to hold the Warhead until 5:40, Lucy deffing low, NoMercy high and XB and od at the back. With Wish stocking up on the armour it took a mass push on the Warhead for the captain to finish it, with the blues getting taken down steadily, one by one in quick succession. For a change the blues pushed forward at the end but they didn't do a very good job - XB needed help in the Ops Room and od arrived on the scene, only for dirz to stroll up through the main route and take the Final on 5:00, just before od could properly react. Not at all a great fragging performance from the blues to open the match with.

The second round is the sort which is pretty hard to flesh out descriptively, so I don't think I'll bother. The fact that it took Team.XB until 2:43 just to reach the Main Gate should tell you what an uphill struggle this match was probably going to turn out to be for them. Player problems aside, if the teams are even and that's how your team attacks, you are going to have issues with winning anything. Alright, technically the teams weren't even because Toone started to play with the other four reds, but on the other hand he was hitting nothing but himself :P Wish had no such trouble, getting sprees and rampages and so on. NoMercy managed to breach the nest at one point, only to have Bn snipe him one as he landed. Bn then brilliantly suicided :whatever: You already got him, you silly fool! The fact that it was now 5v4 let Wish range forward very comfortably all the time, which helped him reach 38 kills to next best luckmeister Bn's 19. The blues were already in trouble :hangover:

MAP 2 - DESERTSTORM

QUICK MAP REPORT:

After a protracted argument about whether or not subs should be used, or who should forfeit, or whether 4v5 was fair, the round started with Toone once again sitting. Before when people talked about Team.Wish's CoC I thought they meant dirz  Anyway, even teams or not it's a bit sad when the red team are allowed to kill every one of the opposition unhindered on their very first run to the Scud, Wish simply dodging onto it on a laughable 9:38. Only afterwards did Lucy remember there was a belt she could hammer to, taking it and suiciding just before sneez could beat her to it. The blues fell back for some hefty Sam def. They were pumped, they were psyched, they were ready. The one thing they weren't was looking for Bn, who ran up the undeffed ramp (od and Lucy having chased Wish into the Sam room, leaving their positions - good thing Wish then killed himself for them), feigned death in the corner, waited for the blue tit twins to reappear and then ran in behind them, taking the Sam on 8:42 to the annoyance of the unwarned XB at the back. As with the Scud, the reds killed all the blues on the way through the Underground first run - 8:19 - and then followed a rocket launch from dirz which would have been spectacular if only it hadn't been completely crap. This wasn't really a problem though, because the reds just trotted up the hill in two runs and Wish took the Final on 7:47, with NoMercy's flak-in-the-backs failing to fully connect in time.

Another argument ensued, this one about Wish's birthday, his star sign, and why he had a birthmark on his arse in the shape of an arse. That was a bit weird, I have to be honest. Anyway, XB was still quite pumped, psyched and ready, so he attacked the Scud exactly the same as Wish had, just one second slower. Wish took the Sam def upon himself, staying back with constantly loading rocket spam, but XB nipped in behind him while Lucy came low to distract on 0:59. I can't help thinking that if the blues had worked harder to manage this kind of thing more often, with nicely timed attacks and good comms, they could have found more ways past Team.Wish. Bn couldn't snipe XB in time to keep him from getting the Underground on 0:42, but one thing he did do right was to pistol whip od in the back at the Final, just before the blue player could claim the map for his team with three seconds to go. Unlucky on od but the red defence had done just enough.

MAP 3 - GOLGOTHAAL

QUICK MAP REPORT:

The usual river launch, courtesy of dirz and Bn, sent Wish to the Temple on 11:49. The blues pulled off some nice, aggressive Temple defence for a while, making it tough on dirz to snag the Doors on 11:19, just before he got taken down. The reds then began running low with no thought to launching, which allowed Wish to dodge quickly to the Undead on 11:08 while three blues fannied around, chasing sneez into a corner. Then came a comical Hurons defence: Lucy was in place to try to stop sneez's door launch on Bn, but she died instead, meaning that Bn was able to get up straight away. He took XB down in the Hurons room but XB's last rockets caught Bn at the same time, and the objective was saved. Not for long though. Wish and dirz charged up the stairs, meeting little resistance, until Wish finally arrived at the top end of the bridge. He then single-handedly cleared the place out with a mixture of rockets and grenades and only just managed to avoid being teamkilled by  dirz who was trying to claim Hurons on 10:29 for himself. Not this time, dirz. There were then quite a few close saves on the Siege tower, notably on sneez sneaking underneath it and then dirz getting splatted by rockets when he could have sworn he'd got the obj. It was left to Wish to again just run and shoot, taking it with 33hp on 9:23, even though the blues had done quite well in holding positions and getting back to them from respawns. Dirz then found a great little secret ledge at the top of the long stairs, though how he was allowed to get there at all is still up for question. The rest of the blues were too busy chasing low droppers I suppose, and Lucy sniping from the right tower may not have spotted him heading in. Anyway, the stairs route was how he took the Dungeon Doors on 8:45, just before Wish could dodge in with his pathetic 2hp. The blues got killed off at the Attackers with no problems and Bn was in right away, making him only the third red player to get more than 0 points :o This was followed by a nice 'n' easy Heart on 8:21 from point-needing dirz, with no-one on the left bridge to stop him, but this round had still been The Wish Solo Show :coolfip:

Wahey, Pete in for Yako! Within half an hour of saying, and I quote: "Why would I fucking care about the cup?" Two-faced gnob, honestly. Anyway, it was now 5v5 and, with memories of the last time Team.Wish had tried to defend Golgotha, I had high hopes for the blues in this round. Team.XB started not too badly, with od getting the Doors on 2:59 and Pete luck-dodging his way through to the Undead on 2:43 while everyone in the world failed to finish off his last 10hp. Intrepid sneez lurked in the Undead room and waited for four blue players to run back past him - he was spotted but he stopped to type a warning to his team and so Wish and dirz were ready on the cliff when the mass outside launch came. NoMercy got up but Wish minied him when he landed (where the hell did you get that mini?), and he and dirz finished off the rest, including XB who also barely got up. Meanwhile Pete was growling up the stairs in solo mode and dirz only just managed to react to hold him off Hurons. Good warnings, low def!! Bn, this means you :hm: NoMercy was the man who took Hurons, via a door launch, sniping sneez out en route to finish it on 1:18, but it would be a hell of an attack which won them the map. Team.XB didn't have a hell of an attack in them, in fact they couldn't even make it to the Siege tower, in spite of effectively playing 4v5 for the whole round because Toone was failing to make it onto the scoresheet. Would Pete make enough of a difference? We all know the answer by now :\

MAP 4 - AUTORIP

QUICK MAP REPORT:

Well, Pete might not have been able to affect the outcome of the match, but he certainly changed this map. With Pete deffing the window with some eagle-eyed snipeage, Team.XB were allowed to roam much farther forwards than usual, meaning that XB was comfy at the back while everyone else worked on taking down what few reds Pete missed. Every one of the blues was getting on the scoretable, thanks to the confidence that Pete had brought. And the reds were trying every trick in the book (except the Bumper Book of F9) to reach the Despatch. They did come close more than once, with the blues making some ridiculous saves which must have had only pixels in them. Anyway, it was 5:58 when Toone took the obj, he and Wish dodging into the window while Bn tried to scamper through the Warehouse. He was only lucky enough to hit the Defence Doors before he got twotted, but 10 points is 10 points if you're Blackninja. The Dev defence was another epic display of last second saves - the reds got up there time and again, only to be killed within yards of it. Pete in the window was hard to get past, especially with XB's rox flaring behind him. Lucy was covering the stairs, od the ramp and NoMercy had the Test Room. As far as I can tell from the demos, Wish had to pull off yet another vials ramp hammer-jump into the window to take it on 2:40, while sneez served as a distraction on the stairs. Dirz then soon sneaked low to finish the map on 2:02 but the blues weren't worried. They even had a nice spread of defence frags, with od's 30 points second to Pete's 31.

The blues weren't going to flush this one down the shitter. XB was hitting the Despatch on a mere 6:27, thanks to some dodgy non-warnings between red players. He chose exactly the right moment to dodge around from the side route, behind two ignorant reds' backs, and mini poor Bn to death as last man. See what happens when you put dirz in the window? :nono: In order to defend the Dev panel Wish then put dirz in the window  and so it was a good thing that dirz managed to save on Pete who had hammered in and was extremely close to taking the panel on only his second run. Lucy and od then turned up at the same moment - Bn as stairs defender did manage to kill off Lucy but not od, who hopped into the window as dirz fell out of it and took the Dev panel on 5:40. Too easy! With so much time left on the clock everyone was free to take the piss, and so followed a long series of ridiculous suicides out of thin air, to the amusement of everyone. Finally od got tired of the fun and skipped down the ramp, taking out Bn on his way to the bomb, dodging onto it on 4:50 before potting sneez could pull the trigger.

MAP 5 - SIEGE][

QUICK MAP REPORT:

Team.XB finally had a bit of a foothold in this match but they had managed to lose Siege][ to Team.Twnz in the semis, so how would they fare now that Yako was missing into the bargain? Well, they got off to a decent start via a simple and undefended charge across the bridge, with od and Lucy bringing up the rear for reasons which should be pretty obvious to any AS player by now. Wish had clearly (and rightly) decided that roof defence was more important than bridge def, which is why he and dirz were in place when Lucy sent od straight up there from a dark launch. Wish potted od in the face, making his belt fall off and his pants fall down, and the roof was safe. Wish briefly thought about primarying dirz off the edge as a followup but only just managed to restrain himself. Bn was up there too so, as usual, Wish had three on the roof, with Toone inside the tower and sneez outside for warnings. Pete was trying to clear the roof with some low snipeage but he wasn't having much luck, and XB was forced by Wish into doing exactly what Met did - push into the tele. Life for the blues was being made difficult by sneez killing launches and Toone hammering the ones that did get in, then they had three shock ho's on the roof to get past as well. Pretty much a perfect 5v5 defence imo but it can be overcome by a perfect attack, which is what Team.XB came up with. Having been killed off, od went back for the belt and rifle, then arrived at the dark spot. Wish had been getting sprees on the roof by killing off low runners but he chose the wrong moment to peek over the edge, meeting a sniper round in the face from od. Pete duly turned up to send od high and Bn was cold and alone on the roof - od did some weird, looping landing to make him miss his combo and dodged onto the button to win on a damn nice 7:34. Great round by all.

The reds opened their Siege][ campaign in iffy fashion, with both Wish and Bn being sent directly to the middle tower from left and right launches respectively. They landed nicely and Bn prepared to launch Wish and his belt, but Pete was waiting in the middle tower and rocketed Bn in the face. Wish killed off Pete and then brilliantly suicided anyway, presumably because he had lost too much belt and hp in the exchange. Good save, Pete. Blind fool NoMercy was busy camping the dark spot from the shock rifle but he totally failed to see dirz just run up the stairs behind him and snipe him in the arse, which left XB alone outside to fend off dark launches. He soon died and the reds were free to do what they wanted against NoMercy as the only outside defender, while Pete and od took up positions on the roof and XB and Lucy stayed inside. It was a slightly different layout to Wish's defence but would it be as effective? Nope, the reason being that Lucy, od and particularly XB fell into the suicide-for-a-high-spawn trap, the same one that Wish's team had obviously been told to avoid. XB spent four hundred years suiciding while the reds charged up the tower, but for a while it looked as though Lucy and Pete were secure on the roof and had it covered. With ten seconds to go there was no-one anywhere near Lucy on the top ramp, and Pete could see she was fine. If only he had turned to check the sky as dirz's suicide appeared in the console, he would have seen Toone pop up nicely from a middle tower launch and take the Final on 0:03. Was it Pete's fault for not watching high, NoMercy's fault for not shouting a warning, XB's fault for his epic suicidation, or everyone's fault for failing to watch the console with five seconds remaining? Meh, who cares.

MAP RESULT: TEAM.WISH WIN!

MAP 6 - GOLGOTHA][AL

QUICK MAP REPORT:

Red were now supremely confident and they could afford to make enormous mistakes with a 4-1 lead, which is where Bn and dirz came in :whatever: The tube brigade was faced with a question: how do we make a bigger fuckup of our last Golg2 start launch, when we set it and everyone just ran past? They came up with the perfect answer: make Wish take it this time and then send him face first into a big wall. It was so bad Wish couldn't even muster a  So, that plan got ditched and everyone just pushed low, which is what they had been doing pretty well all evening. It worked for them again and Wish had the Gates on 9:40, when XB got sniped in the head and od struggled to cope with everything at once as last man. Next came pretty much a textbook lesson in how to make a Golg2 defence look seriously stupid. First of all, XB stayed back to cover the gate launches, but the important aspect to this is surely to stop the attackers from reaching the rocket-launcher? Strange then that dirz was allowed to just walk in, pick one up and leave while XB strolled around on the opposite side of the roof - I don't think he ever even saw dirz. This meant that once Bn had shocked Pete out of the way to take the Sword on 8:57, dirz was right behind him to set a corner launch to the level where the lifts come out at the top. Od had tried to combo it before it happened but he failed, forcing him to suicide to try and scramble frantically through the temple. He wasn't in time to stop Bn slinking in on 8:41, and Toone getting the Lifts four seconds previously had only been a formality, though it didn't exactly make the blues' defence look any better. The Final def was ironically the best portion of the map for the blues - it eventually went on 8:03. As far as I can tell, this was the worst defence round Team.XB played in the cup - no Temple defence, no-one checking the only rocket-launch Team.Wish had ever done in Golg2 in previous rounds, pathetic Lifts defence, failure to stop just one attacker taking the Gate r/l, Gates falling on the first run... christ.

The gods themselves would surely have intervened had the blues somehow won this one, but of course they were never going to. To do it they would have had to have had (l2english) a ridiculously fluid attack, some new launches, and been reliant on some titanic cockups from the reds, always an option with dirz playing. They could summon up none of these things, however, and their display was pretty feeble altogether. One bright spot was that everyone was starting to shout at Loco for talking during play, so I did my best to keep him doing it just so I could talk shit about him later. Pwnt! Anyway, NoMercy took a goat's lifetime to reach the Gates on 0:47, leaving the blues little time to string anything together, especially since the reds reacted by sending three defenders to the Temple :shout: It didn't matter much anyway because Bn did enough to put the predictable gate launchers off, then even after he died they were still fucking up things like simple hammerjumps and weapon tosses. NoMercy finally got XB airborne with two seconds to go but even if the Temple hadn't been stuffed with red players the launch was a fail anyway. At this point the remainder of the blue team picked themselves up, walked back to the first spawn and clambered back aboard the failboat.

MAP 7 - DESOLATE][

QUICK MAP REPORT:

Wish could have been forgiven for bursting into tears as Bn and dirz this time sent him straight into the ceiling and back down again from the usual start launch, but he cheered up when Toone took the next one to land on the Outer Base on 9:49. The reds then had the right idea by pushing both high and low at once to try to break up the blues' defence, but the blues were equal to this and it took quite a few people dying at the right time for dirz to push through to the Lower Level on 8:59 - better from Team.XB. Wish then took down XB with a shock and pushed low, only for XB to pull off a countershot to save the Generator Room, at which point he camped the low tunnel, leaving NoMercy back high, od covering the ramp and Pete and Lucy ranging forward to do the damage. Bn helped quite a lot by reaching the bottom of the ramp and then hammerjumping up with not nearly enough health, but the blues were making a pretty good job of holding the Genny even without that. It was an impressive 6:59 when dirz finally got there after shocking Pete and od to the deck. Lucy was above the ramp but amazingly elected not to bother chasing him into the high room, probably thinking that NoMercy was there anyway. He wasn't, he was way out of position in spite of not having been killed recently, and the reds had their new spawn. Still, good def. Next Wish jumped into the vent, as he had in previous matches, and waited for a break in the blues' very backy sort of backdef, with only Pete pushing forward to the fan room. XB saw the vent explode and was there at the button to send a couple of combos up, but he then ran out of ammo and switched to plasma, which was when Wish dropped and dodged onto the button on 6:17 before XB could finish him. Maybe if XB had just stood aside and waited for Wish to drop he could have just comboed the button to save it, but he chose the wrong option and that was the worst Guard Room defence since D1sc made a bit of a fool of Meteor in the quarters. Anyway, the Bridges went pretty much immediately and the Guns didn't last long either. Dirz pushed along the bridge while the backdef all got suckered into dealing with someone hiding under the ramp, and the round was over by the 5:10 mark. A great first half of the map undone by a tragic second half.

The blues could still salvage this map with even a half decent assault, and they did manage to make a fairly good start. XB made it into Sector B but sneez was there waiting for him with rockets - Bn pulled off another needless suicide, suggesting that he and sneez had fallen out and were no longer communicating :P Meanwhile od was taking launch after launch and he reached the Outer Base eventually on 4:15. An all-too-brief Lower Level defence ensued, Lucy waiting until sneez had hit a rampage before deciding to don her Diaphragm Of Invisibility +3 and waltz through the reds' pishy low def to claim it on 3:36. Enjoy your suicide, sneez, mwahahaha! Toone then took up the high back position, sneez taking the low tunnel, and Wish, Bn and dirz all freelancing around the ramp. It should have been theoretically impossible for XB to push low on a criminal 2:42 but that's exactly what he did with NoMercy's help. XB got Bn out of the way and NoMercy took down sneez even as Wish killed him in reply, but Wish couldn't manage XB as well and the blues were in. However, they fell apart quite a lot at the Guard Room, attacking in ones and twos, trying hopeless hammerjumps, no-one setting any launches, no-one going through the vent, no mass pushes, no comms. To be fair I think every one of them came close at least once, but no cigar. It was a shame after such a strong start but they handed the map to Team.Wish once they broke through to the Generator Room. The only other thing worth nothing was that sneez came top of the defence with 17 kills, which is what happens when you put a guy with a belt and a full rocket-launcher in the Sector B door :trout:

MAP RESULT: TEAM.WISH WIN!

SCORE: 6 - 1

MAP 8 - SUBMARINEBASE][

QUICK MAP REPORT:

Blade came in for Toone at this point, but red refused to panic :D The blues laid themselves out nicely to defend the Vent panel, with XB back with a keg, Lucy and Pete handling the stairs and underneath the bridge, and od and NoMercy watching high and the hatch. Bn got sent to the roof but he got d0nged before he could make anything happen, so the reds pushed through the base, even while Blade tried and failed to join the server. Eventually dirz managed to sneak low with little health, taking out the Vent on 8:41 before XB could react, though Lucy did manage to finish him before he could flak the Gate directly afterwards. The blues then fell far too far back to the Gate, with Lucy, XB, od and NoMercy all low, leaving it vulnerable to a ranged attack. XB had allowed Team.Wish to use mercs because of Blade's connection problems, but Bn didn't need any such help to get the Gate on 7:52. With NoMercy and Lucy dead and respawned near the sub, they had to wait for the Gate to open before they could push forward, which left only XB, od and Pete inside to fend off the reds. With none of them watching low, The Gates opened, Lucy and NoMercy pushed inside, Bn jinked straight past them and took the Docks on 7:36 :( Pete and od then stayed back at the Docks as last men while the others pushed forward, but the front three were taking an eternity to deal with even one red player at a time, which meant they were getting nowhere near the belt and keg, or even the high bridge to shock spam the stairs. The reds had all the freedom in the world and it wasn't long before Wish had reached the Docks and flakked Pete in the face, leaving od alone to watch in despair as Bn squeezed into the Sub on 6:32. Wish had the Final done 14 seconds later.

Another non-event round from the blues here. NoMercy managed the Vent on 2:46 and od the Gate on 1:53, but then the bridge area degenerated into a sea of shock combos. Only Wish was consistently covering the bridge while the rest of his team camped underneath it, but apart from dirz getting a lucky Docks save on Lucy with a secondary shock meant for someone else, and Bn cleaning up with plenty of fine pottage, the reds just made good use of the shock rifle and their own weapon toss binds to hold the Docks for the remainder.

MAP 9 - RIVERBED]|[AL

QUICK MAP REPORT:

There was no reporter bot for this round and the cup stats link appears to have been archived in the forums, so I can't find it :( The objective times may not be exact here.

With a playoff now massively unlikely all that was left for the blues to take from this match was a little pride, and so far even that had been in short supply. But the match isn't over until the fattest lady on the server sings, so the blues pushed forward right away to try to stem the first red onslaught. Bn thought he'd been really clever by mistiming a hammerjump and ending up hiding on the ledge on the side of the minigun room, then it took him five years to decide to push for the Compressor room in the hope that no-one noticed, only for dirz to collect the r/l, completely unspotted, and take it from under his nose on 10:16. Thanks to dodgy demos I can only assume it was Blade who was setting the incredibly bad launches to nowhere from the ledge beside the health packs, maybe as revenge for Bn doing the same thing to him in the semis. The blues were pushing forward for a change and doing quite well when you consider that half the red team were bouncing off the ceiling at this point. But Wish had other plans and he just bolted through with Blade and sneez's help to claim the Tunnels on 9:36. XB can be thanked for such a long Charge hold - it wasn't pretty but it was effective as he just stood by the high health packs and spammed rocket after rocket, getting some quite comical high saves, particularly on dirz :P He couldn't hold it forever, though, especially with next to no help, and Wish passed him and front-dodged from the railings to the Charge on 8:18, taking out despairing Lucy as he landed. The blues fell back again, with Pete pushing out and od sniping from the Mines platform. The reds pulled off a good rocket launch from the door, but they were far too early - Bn landed with 20hp and had to stand there waiting for the base doors to open. He ducked inside and got finished off by NoMercy's :mingun: Lucy and Pete then decided that Blade was so dangerous they had both better chase him off into a far corner, which meant sneez, dirz and Bn were quite happy to run straight through the middle and put pressure on the low backdef. Dirz took two blues down and sneez sneaked around the big box to flak the Final on 7:20.

All the reds needed was a basic fraggy defence, the sort they excelled at. Hardly any launches to worry about, hardly any alternative routes, one of the most linear maps in the league. Well, meet Team.Wish. They pushed forward well, as always, but NoMercy was virtually unmarked by anyone and needed only two attempts to reach the rockets and hit the Compressor on 2:44 in exactly the same way as dirz had, only blue had no-one quite as nooby as Bn to play that part. Incidentally, Bn, I also saw your complete failure to do a simple hammerjump to the def spawn roof, but I've decided not to mention it :impact: The blues then set up a long double launch over the top, which Lucy took, to land perfectly between box and wall and noobagely hammer herself in the face, leaving only 46hp for her to limp to the Tunnels with, which she failed to do. XB then picked his moment perfectly on the next run, hiding in the undefended sniper room and waiting until he saw Pete take out two red backdeffers, then sneaking out and hammering from the box into the Tunnels on a still-worrying 1:36. Sensing no imminent catatastrophe, the reds got complacent, with Bn and dirz reaching the Entrances before any of the blues and then both getting totally owned on the first run  Something weird happened next, namely od dropping low to get the Mines like he thought it was just for a laugh, except it turned out to be a great idea. He probably didn't expect to win the map but then Lucy managed to hit the Charge on 0:36, and in that situation it's so nice to not have to worry about the mines with so little time remaining. Not that he deserves any credit, the piss taker, especially since he stayed there and waited instead of suiciding to push on the Charge with the others. Fate stepped in and made sure he got no glory at all out of it, as XB sent NoMercy airwards with a rocketlaunch, and the blue player ran through the poorly-defended high tunnel to finish the Final with a rocket cluster with 7 seconds to go. NoMercy > od :bounce:

MAP 10 - THEDUNGEON]|[AL

QUICK MAP REPORT:

It was now crystal clear what Team.XB needed in order to secure a draw - massive luck, ridiculous decisions, and Bn defending all the objectives. They had just left it too late to find that out. Anyway, even after such a good (if close) win on the previous map, this one proved that they were just as capable of ruining a round for themselves as Team.Wish were. In a ten minute map with only four important objectives, you might expect a cup final team full of good players to at least finish the map, no matter if the attack was good or bad. But that's if they're not playing against Wish and Bn, and I singled those two out because by the time the first quarter of the map was over they were pretty much the only two on the scoresheet. The backman in the Falls was still dirz but Wish and Bn were doing such a d0ng job in front of him that he must have been getting quite bored waiting for something to happen. At first I thought sneez had been given the position of covering the def spawn, but then I realised he was just spending so much time respawning that he always just happened to be coming out of that area  Anyway, Lucy eventually picked up the boots and bounced her way inside on 7:08, just as dirz comboed her to take himself to 1 point. Dirz: all about the backdef :tent: Next came a really effective Skull defence, with Team.Wish virtually all back. Whenever a blue player did enter the last room it seemed as though there were four red players chasing him or her, with Bn waiting as last man with some great flak work. Normally this kind of thing doesn't work very well because other attackers can sneak in while the defence is distracted, but it worked really well here because it's very hard to sneak to the Skull. XB came close once, twice, but only when the reds made the mistake of pushing out too far in the direction of their own spawn was he able to jump in and finish it off with rockets on 4:45 - he was the only blue player who had managed to see the objective at all. Bn and dirz then fell back to the end, with the other three ranging out in front, and the fact that the blues just kept attacking in ones and twos with no-one even bothering to hit the defence reroute button showed how finished they were. True, a few blues reached the top stairs but that didn't matter much with Bn and dirz there to mop up every last one of them. Full time defence with Wish on at least double anyone else's kills :hangover:

If you care at all about the second round then you might be alone, because even the spectators were now setting up a pug instead. There's not much point in going into detail. Suffice to say dirz got there on 8:17, helped by the fact that Lucy had quit at the end of the first round, leaving Team.XB to defend 4v5, and Team.Wish had won the 2009 Assault Cup with a bit of luck, a lot of skill and a great all-round performance in all three of their matches :party2::beer:

MAP RESULT: TEAM.WISH WIN!

hahahahah, my god.. those screenies really show nothing m8 :p:! not even close what really happened =)

good game being so smart to def low  (check time)
turning points, sums match up.
If it wasn't for people shouting 'LOW!' on TS, I wouldn't have checked low. It's easy to say stupid things from a sideline.

Wish his team was way too strong, from the moment I entered (and probably before), it felt like people couldn't be arsed to play.
