The point really is that you defrag to stop fragmented files...
If you let a disk get highley fragmented and then defrag it will not necessarly solve the problems of fragments... It should but its not perfect. A format and then regular defrags (every 2 weeks at least on a system where you do alot of data transfer) is the only way.
And if you are good you can reformat with not too much hassel. I have it down to a fine art.... Takes me as long as the PC takes to take on the information and about 30mins more to set everysingle thing up how I like it
