Actually, Microsoft have agreed to continue support for Windows 98, ME & NT until the 3rd Quarter of 2006.

The TechNet bulletin (in english) for the vunerabilities highlighted at the top of this thread can be found here:

I read PAY all over that page, but hey...
Then you obviously missed the key points:

  • Customers can request security fixes for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, and the most current version of their components until June 30, 2006 through normal assisted-support channels.
  • Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me downloads for existing security issues will continue to be available through regular assisted-support channels at no charge until June 30, 2006.
You only pay to phone them up to get support

so all this shit on the news about how were all going to die if we use windows can be fixed by downloading this one little file ?

WindowsXP-KB828028-x86-ENU.exe

is that correct ? or is it far more difficult and serious than that ?

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

You need to be running a version of Internet Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update.

Download the latest version of Internet Explorer

Once Internet Explorer is installed, you can go to the Windows Update site by typing http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com into the address bar of Internet Explorer.

If you prefer to use a different Web browser, updates to Windows may be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

maybe MS just made that up in order to get their dodgy software on everyones' PCs?

Yes, and dont forget to have an uptodate Virus Scanner installed.

If youve got a legit copy then whats the big deal about Microsoft knowing youve downloaded an update?
