lo ppl, i was thinking of getting a new gfx card, the 9800 pro i was thinking it is a good card
when you measure performance against cost, was hoping some ppl have it
and can post what they think about it, and what a good price would be.

thx in advance

my curr sys specs

how much euros are you willing to spend ? based on that, we could suggest alternatives with better price/performance ratio.

edit: in german stores I find prices for a 128 MB Radeon 9800 Pro of at least ~ 180 euros. The 256 MB models are totally overpriced.
Now if you're gonna go for a 128 MB card (256 MB models definately have an advantage in future games IMO), I would suggest you the GeForce 6600 GT for AGP really, it costs about 220-240 euros but the performance increase over the 9800 pro is quite big. In particular, the XFX 6600GT AGP (XFX is a manufacturer) is supposed to be a good card because of the memory chips they put on it, very well overclockers. I think that card is listed for about 220 euros here. The only downside of the 6600GT is the 128-bit memory interface which certainly is a bottleneck for that card, seeing as there are 256 MB versions of it expected (currently only 128 MB ones are available). However, the 9800 Pro also "only" has 128-bit interface, but back then that was top of the line.
Now alternatively you could spend some more and go straight for a GF 6800 series card, which has the advantage of a 256-bit interface and the chance of unlocking extra pipelines on the non-GT/Ultra models (if your system is AGP, not PCI-E). Apart from that, there are more models with 256 MB memory in that sector of cards.
Dont bother with the Radeon 9800 XT btw, its just an auto-overclocking 9800 Pro with 256 MB and is really overpriced for the minimal performance improvement over the Pro.
If you're an ATI-only customer, you can only have the 9800 Pro/XT or go straight for the X800 series which cost a lot more (and the X800 Pro is overpriced compared to the GF 6800 series). They havent released AGP versions of the X700 models, and your system is AGP I guess.

Hope that helps.

yes my mobo supports up to 8 speed agp, and i am deffo going for an ati
Since i have 128 mb atm i deffo want 1 with 256 mb

I though 9800 pro's with 256 mb were available for 200 - 300 euro's or am i just misinformed there?
thx for the info though but i really had it with nvidea atm

well I can only talk about german prices obviously :p: now technically the Radeon 9800 XT is the same as the Pro, only with 256 MB and the Overdrive feature (afaik anyway). That means a Pro with 256 MB should perform equally to a XT.
now the 256 MB models (Pro/XT) are likely to cost at least 200-250 euros, unless you dutchies have some special shop with extra low prices. And in that price region you can get the 6600 GT :P
and if youre willing to spend 300 on an ATI card, why not just go for the X800 series (SE or Pro might be in that region after xmas) - both have the chance of unlocking extra pipelines, but thats a slim one. Definately better than the 9800XT I think.

here are some benchmarks with all of these cards (except X800 SE unfortunately)

that covers most of the engine range currently available, from top-of-the-line OpenGL games like Doom3 to Source based games like HL2. (Vampire: The Masquerade is also Source based, and I think many future games will be based on D3 or Source engine) (Source = The Source Engine created by Valve for HL2)

personally I wouldnt just not buy a card because its from that or that manufacturer, because at the end of the day all that matters is the performance and stability as well as noise (The ATI models have a slight advantage in the latter). But judge for yourself.

thx for the info m8 :) well i am going for ati cos in the past i have always used nvidea's and i see m8es of mine play with ati's and i am thinking WOW, i am sure there are good nvidea cards aswell but i just want to try a good ati and see if they are truely as brill as ppl say they are. If i really don't like em i will return it and get an nvidea i dont care much for loudness or not though.

price indication is 200 euro's though cba putting down more cos basically i play ut and ut2k4 which runs pretty decent with my gfx atm, but i am gonna upgrade my rig in about 6 months and i want a gfx card which i can use in that rig

green rep for neph!

9800 Pro 128Mb is a good card for much cheapness.
Expect around 6000 3dmark 2003 (se) benchmarks.
256 version benches around the same with an actual decrease in some real world scores.
tomshardware.com has some decent comparrisons.

256 MB versions have the advantage when it comes to AA/AF and with bigger (/more detailed) textures. And I for one think new games will have better textures than old ones. :P

Plus the Pro, if you (and you likely will) get an R 360 (GPU) core it will clock pretty much to Xt levels too.
You can even flash it to Xt if you like.
I run mine (128Mb 9800 Pro) @ 435/390 for the newer games, Hl2/Doom3/FarCry and it handles this no problem.
