hey happy

You said you like Bach (as I do of course). I take it you have Glenn Gould playing goldberg variations and Well-Tempered Clavier etc .... if not they very good.

You know any good music with Bach played on classical guitar? I just got John Williams playing some Rodrigo stuff which I love atm.

I'll have to remember and check the Borodin string quartets also.

edit ok was looking for good versions of Shostakovich and Borodin string quartets.

Found these two both played by the Borodin quartet so they should be good, not sure of one of the labels though. What versions do you have?

I have all versions of Glenn playing the Goldberg variations and also the Well-Tempered clavier (and most of the rest - toccatas, inventiones etc)

You may like his recordings of Prokovjevs piano sonatas and Scriabin. (not for the faint hearted)

Both recordings you have there are the ones, the latter has a new cover but it advertises as the original members recordings. Those are THE recordings, others tried but I can't stand them. The first violin left the Borodin string quartet a decade or so ago the substitute is ok. But the original ensemble was magic.

PS Dmitri Shostakovich was mad about footbal, he loved watching it. He was also obsessed with cleanliness and punctuality. He even send cards to himself (regularly) to check on the delivery of the postal service.

Holy shit Happy, thanks for the tip! I think the Borodin playing Borodin string 1&2 and Shostakovich String Nos 1 - 13 are now the fav cds in my entire collection. Been listening over and over.

One you may like if you haven't got it already is one of Bachs later works played by the Emerson Quartet:

Composer: Bach
Work: The Art of Fugue
Label: Deutsche Grammophon (6 Oct 2003)
Artist: Emerson String Quartet

Complete Beethoven string quartets (7cds £22) by Alban Berg Quartet. I've heard quite a few different versions of Beethovens string quartets, one by the Quartetto Italiano is probably the next best but the Alban Berg version is brilliant and great value too from amazon!

Looks indeed like a very good deal, almost too good to be true!

Ordered it, along with other stuff

Ordered Shostakovich Songs and Waltzes, I know I should know most of them, but am pretty certain not all.

Can't wait till Tuesday/Wednesday :)
