Computer Problem

Dont know if any of you can help me but here goes:

My old cd-rom (52X) pretty much went bye bye so I bought a new one (a sony IDE 52X cd-rom). I installed my new cd-rom exactly the way the old one was installed. When I first turned on my computer windows said there was a problem with my hardware then it loaded fine. However, both my new cd-rom and my cd-writer drives never showed up.

I have win xp.

Any suggestions? I know very little about computers.....I'd rather have it fixed than go and get a refund or whatever.
 
When I took the burner out it worked fine---i think it has something to do with the IDE master/slave setting? I dont know how to change it tho...
 
look on the cdrom it should tell u how to set it
if it on the sam ide as the harddrive it needs to be set as slave
its on its own it should be set at master
if u sharen it wiff another cdrom one needs to primary the otha
needs to be slave
