Hello guys, I need your very qualified advice :)

I'm looking for a laptop. I need it to run at least 4-5h on batteries for normal work (aka no gaming etc), but i'd like to have something actually better than my current pc, so I want/"need":

2.3 ghz dual core or better
4GB ram
dedicated GFX capable of actually doing something (512mb plus i guess?Nvidia or ATI I have no clue which is best now)
max 15,4 inch screen, i don't want a heavy brick

actually, I could get a small netbook and a brick thing, but that seems to be a bit silly.

What I want is be able to have a long life on batteries for casual stuff and work, and plug it in when i want power.

Thanks guys

imho get a business notebook and not a cheap and badly built consumer one.

Okay, you've to pay more, but you really have benefits from it. Like a very good support, really good material quality, easy and smart changing of components.
Also the batteries are mostly made of better materials so they last longer.

And you can easily get Docking-Stations (very handy imho) and the laptops have a 2nd battery slot, so you've a huge battery lifetime of over 7 hours.
Personally i like HP Business ones (6910 (<- class one and is cheap when bought used) or the new 6930 (<- which i know from work and my personal favourite)).

My sister got a DELL XPS. Also a good Laptop.

I would love to buy a new laptop too (most likely the 6930 then), but i wait till they add SSDs and Win7 in their business line.

edit:
I can't recommend Acer. Sure they have decent notebooks, but what i experienced the material quality aint the best.

personally i might be going for one of these soon:

i still got a 15.4" laptop atm and i can say that a big screen is really important (I also used a netbook for a short while and gosh... it sucked :bj:). so, yes, go for a 15.4" one. oh and mine is a 2004 Acer -> i can totally recommend Acer - also material-wise (i've seen toshibas fall apart after 2 years and mine is still in a very good shape)!

i "entered" my "preferences" here:

(ow, sorry, the site is displayed in german. maybe not for you? but i think it is the same for everyone)

so, if you do the same and sort it by price you might get a list of interesting notebooks, for yourself, too. (at least i did it that way, because i dunno anything about computer/laptop hardware anymore -> no longer up to date :( ).

so any comments on these two are welcome from my side, too :)

well, I have an acer aspire 9300, it's nice but a bit dated and battery endurance has always been less than 2h, now 1,5.

I also think 15.4 inch is fine.

I really dig the business things, 2nd battery instead of a dvd drive is fine.

I like the stuff you show me taki, I'd be ready to pay a bit more if needed.

Any new input would be awesome :)

With newer HP notebook (>nc6220) you dont have to decide between battery or opitcal drive.
Because it's possible to connect a (huge) battery that is shapped like an "U" to the bottom of the device. So you've every drive and even the possibility to connect it with those 2 batteries into a docking-station without problems.

I have a dell xps .... its nice.

The lenovo t-series are also nice, pretty expensive though.
