How fucking good does it look.....imagine a PS3 with GT5....I'd be in heaven. I want now now!

it's GFX chip more powerful than TWO 6800ultras?!! FS

here's some info about it....

Sony also confirmed the PlayStation 3, will use Blu-Ray discs as its media format. The discs can hold up to six times as much data as current-generation DVDs. It will also support CR-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. It also confirmed the machine would be backward-compatible all the way to the original PlayStation. It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a slot for a detachable 2.5 inch HDD somewhat similar the Xbox 360's

Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz, giving the whole system 2.18 teraflops of overall performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, and have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512mb of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It will be manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which would cost roughly $1000 total if bought today.

To show off the PlayStation 3's graphical brawn, Sony showed several game demos, including an Unreal 3 tech demo of what appeared to be Unreal Tournament 2007. In what must come as a relief to developers, Epic Games' Tim Sweeney was on hand to vouch for the PS3, saying it was "easy to program for" and that Epic had received its first PS3 hardware two months ago. He proved the tech demo was real time by showing it again and manipulating the camera and zooming in.

The PlayStation 3 will also sport some hefty multimedia features, such as video chat, internet access, digital photo viewing, digital audio and video. Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi introduced it as a "Super computer for computer entertainment."

More powerful than two 6800s in SLI? I doubt that, but I'm open to being proved wrong. Still, shows how much of a loss leader the console hardware is - they're obviously expecting to make the money back on the software, which is why console games are on average £10 more in the UK than the equivalent PC game.

e.g. - Doom 3 for PC - £19.99 everywhere (high street) atm. Doom3 for Xbox - £34.99 everywhere (high street).

Isn't that the continual joke with consoles - über-1337 graphics engine, pwns everything out there (supposedly), but, OMFG! 99% of all console gamers will be playing with the console hooked up to a bog standard television, which in the UK, means a resolution of (i think) 625x625 at most (its less in america, not sure about Europe) - so the graphics will still look pants! :D

Wonder if lcd TVs show a higher rez, or how many console gamers play with the console hooked up to an HDTV or a proper monitor?

ps3 is going 2 own m8s :)

fave consoles atm

yeh a lot of die hard fans complaing about that. People did at a big opening about it and a sony spokesman was fast to say "that is only a prototype controller" All that was definite about them was that they will be bluetooth.

lol yeh the controller is way crap :D - though i do agree they need to re-invent the ps2 controller because its a bit old now.

I personally like the xbox 360 controller. Wheras the revolution controller looks like my DVD remote :D

looks good, might actually get a console after years of not bothering

and why re-do the ps2 controller? the original is perfection fs

I hope all next-gen consoles will flop.
Sorry but I'm not paying €350 or even €250 for some new graphics I really couldn't care less about :|

But still... PS3>XBOX360 which imho is a fucking joke with their demo's which looked shitty and with shitty framerates because "the system is only running at 30% capacity" bullshit.

lol ur saying that on the wrong forum m8 esp as most people here spend £1000+ at least on a machine really just for one or two games lol and never use the real power of their PC for anything else.

Ive always wondered about that. I think the introduction of the PS2 came with promised resolutions of up to 1280x1024. WTf ?! You still get the shite TV resolution.
That is 7xx by 5xx pixels IIRC (that is what I got on my PC as TV res anyway, dunno what of this the TVs actually show)

Using your high end console with computer monitors is just a joke IMO for you could just as well use the much better PC calculation power, adjustability, controllability and of course the option for a lot of non-gaming applications :P

The only reason I ever saw for a console TBH was Gran Turismo.
