Hi,

I'm thinking of ordering some parts for my new system tomorrow, this is what I had in mind:

XFX PCIe 256M 7900GT XT VIVO 550M €239.79
Intel Core 2 Duo/E6600 775 1066FSB 2.40Ghz 4MB €299.88
ASUS P5B €121.38
Corsair 2048MB DDR2 2x128MX64,5300,C4 2X1GB Value Select €243.64
Zalman CNPS9500 LED €44.51

Subtotaal: €949.20

I was wondering if the corsair value select is good memory to go for? or would something like corsair xms memory be better? Also, is the motherboard good enough, stable enough for overlclocking? Nothing extreme, only by upping the FSB.

And last, at the moment I have a 400W Allied psu, never heard of it tbh, but I needed something to replace my blown up one at the time. Will this psu support my new system? I will be adding my old DVD-rom and DVD-writer, together with 1 WD 60 GB 7200, 1 WD 200 GB 7200, and 1 WD 36 GB 10000 RPM.

I hope you people can give me some advice :D

thanks in advance

Need at least 500W, better is 600W. Only ur GFX takes 400W :)
Why don't u go for the GTO btw?

if you go with that CPU, see if you can afford a better graphics card to get a more balanced system. (Radeon1900XT or 7900GTO at least, I'd say)
Also I would add a new good PSU with 500W (get a good brand so its very efficient) to make sure you don't run out of power. (Enermax Liberty series, bequiet, etc.). An absolute High End system with a 8800GTX takes about 310W when used heavily, so you'll be on the safe side with a good 500W PSU. Your 400W NoName model *might* be ok but I wouldn't put my money on it.
The RAM is alright although I think for that price you can get sticks that are more than "value series", try looking for labels like XMS etc. - but it doesn't really make a difference.
Other than that it's fine.

ok thanx, I'll keep that in mind.

I really want the GTO, but it's sold out everywhere! Even second hand it's not available anymore :o So I thought I'd go for the GT and wait a few months before buying a 8800gtx or something. Shame really since the GTO was such a nice price for it's quality, or is there any other card comparible to the GTO for around the same price? I think I do want to stick with nvidia

the Radeon1900XT would be similarly good
but if you really want nvidia, well... GTO or 8800 series IMO ;)

most ppl tend to recommend x1950 pro 256 as a way to go, simply because u get more speed for ur $, same thing goes for 6600, id stick with 6400, can be overclocked easily if its starting to feel like it. if ur looking for good case then go with antec sonata II, a bit more expensive but deffo worth the investment.

edit:

about to order new pc as well, gonna be smthn like this:
P5B
INTEL CORE 2 E6400 2.13GHZ 1066/2M S775

SEA BARRACUDA 7200.10 250GB 16MB SATA3G/S
SAMSUNG DVD+/-RW DL RAM 18X BLACK BULK
ANTEC SONATA II PIANO BLACK

Looks nice, but i don't think the corsair value memory is gonna handle overclocking very well, but you'll probably have a good enough computer to run most new games, but most likely running the new shader 3.0 will not work very well, tried it on a 7800gt sli series(2x512)gfx ram. It of course depends on really how much eyecandy you need for your games :)

GTO on it's way anyway :D

one more question tho, I've seen GeIL Ultra 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) memory priced pretty cheap, would this be good memory to go for? I want to be able to overclock the core 2 duo e6600 to reach about 3.0 ghz, would this be good ram to go for? Or would the Corsair xms serie be better?

Thanks!

[edit] also, is the asus p5b good enough to do that overclock to 3ghz?

geil modules are usually pretty good for OC - XMS shouldnt be any better (so much that you'd notice anyway) so if you want, pick up the geil. (this sentence sounds stupid for a german :P)

The P5B is fine for OCing, although I don't know if there's a difference in OC-ability to the Deluxe version (the one I recommended in the other thread).
You can never guarantee a OC-result of XX GHz, and I don't see why you'd want to OC a fresh C2D (a 6600 especially). It's really fast out of the box.

yeah it's not like it's an absolute must, it's just that I had been reading some articles about the e6600 in combination with 2 gig 800mhz ddr2 was an overclocking beast :D I'll see how it is out of the box first tho ofcourse, no need doing it yet, but it's nice to know there's the posibility

lol that sentence sounds stupid for a dutch person too

well I got the GeIL 2 x 1gb set offered for 100 euro's, and he has about 10 sets :o would it be worth while going for 4 x 1gb, or would that be a major overkill?

[edit] I was reading the Asus P5B manual and it says: "Due to chipset limitation, DDR2-800 with CL=4 will be downgraded to run at DDR-667 by default setting. If you want to operate with lower latency, adjust the memory timer manual"

So it is possible to operate it at 800 mhz, but just with a different memory timing? Will this be a problem, will I still be able to use the DIMM's at full power? Sorry for my noobness :D

Scimmed this but

www.overclock.co.uk/forums << my clan/community for CSS (check sig lol) REALLY helps out and suggests, it's people who always upgrading/modding/building so they know their stuff!
Personally i say 8800gtx ftw!

edit: or at least a 7950gx2?
