New iAS Public Server - ***UPDATED WITH SERVER DETAILS***
Those of you who take an interest in iAS will know by now the recent, untimely death of the Jolt public iAS server has left us with just the Orange server for public iAS gaming. Not only does this mean we now have just 8 public iAS places between the whole community, but the server isn’t good for everyone either, with packet loss being a fairly regular issue.
In an effort to resolve this, and in collaboration with http://www.digifrag.co.uk I will be running a new public iAS server. This server will be active as of Saturday 22nd Feb and will be running on a very high spec machine located in Telehouse London, on the Netkonnect backbone and using Telia for international routing who are second to none in latency and speed. Benefits include:
The server will be public iAS 24/7 and will never require a password
It will be available for emergency only use for league matches
It will run the latest version of LeagueAS
Map cycle / mods will be fully flexible and will be customised to suit league style iAS
It will hold up to 12 players, though will probably run at 10 for public iAS
There is, unfortunately, one catch - Digifrag are not in a position to provide the server free of charge, and likewise I am not in a position to pay entirely for the server myself. I am more than happy to pay as much as I can and to admin the server, because the iAS community desperately needs decent servers to play on, however in order to make this possible I am calling out to the community to put a little back in and to help out with payments for this server. I have set up a Paypal account to receive donations, details of which are below, and am looking at renting the server for a period of 1 month initially as a trial, then a further 3 months if the server is fine. This will cost in the region of £200 / E200. Any donations will be very gratefully received, and it doesn’t matter how much - just whatever you can afford will be a fantastic help
PLEASE DONATE HERE
In the (unlikely ) event of the donations exceeding the cost of the server I have 3 options:
Rent the server for a longer period of time
Rent a second server for public or league use
Donate the excess money to the running costs of the league
I will listen to public opinion on this matter, however imho it would be better to wait and see how things in the first couple of months before committing to a longer period, and I'm not sure we really need another server atm, so in gratitude of the costs incurred by our wonderful admin from the day-to-day running of the league I am inclined myself to give something back to them
I will, of course, keep track of all the donations and in the event of something preventing this going ahead will provide full refunds. However, this is not just an vague idea, it is definitely going ahead and if Digifrag are unable to provide the server for any reason I will use an alternative supplier such as Jolt or Gameservers.nl
Please watch this space for the IP - as soon as I have more details it will be announced in this post. Thanks for reading, and happy fragging
