A brand new Unreal Tournament has been announced for the Unreal Engine 4. This is going to be a community-sourced project where input from the community, UT modders, and players will be considered to be put into the game. This project will be entirely free to play, but will allow modders space to sell their mods.

HOWEVER, Since this is a community-sourced project, we as UTAssault need to work together to get Assault into the game and done right. Lots of 2k4 fans want to add vehicles, or scrap Assault alltogether. People in this thread have been posting links to relevant threads, so keep up the good work!

From the UnrealEngine blog:
Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.

HERE’S THE PLAN:
We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.
SO WHAT’S THE CATCH?
It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch.
When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.
A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don’t yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we’ll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you’re a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be fun.

Remember, it's more than just voting - voting in a poll doesn't mean much to the developers, and this has been said on their stream. It's important to actually support your reasoning with rational points to actually influence the developers. If you can't think of any, ask here and we can brainstorm talking points

*Original post in spoiler
Thursday, May 8th, Epic is announcing the future of the Unreal Tournament franchise on their Twitch account, http://twitch.tv/unrealengine at 2pm EST / 20:00 CET May 8th, 2014.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/05/02/e...-reveal-future-of-unreal-tournament-on-may-8/

I got the following email from Epic:
In case you haven't seen this:
https://twitter.com/paulmeegan/status/46234162063423897

https://twitter.com/markrein/status/462345081555804161

Remember how I said that we have been talking about how to bring back UT and need to do it in a way that is in collaboration with the community, developers and modders? Well, this is it.

Please spread the word to UT friends and tell them we sincerely welcome them to Thursday's stream, on the forums, and wherever else they want to talk with us.

I have a suspicion that this is going to be an announcement of Open Tournament, a community-developed version of UT. This can be both good and bad if so, because it means that Epic won't put real development power behind this and several individuals involved in OT have a history of destroying things in UT. However, this speculation on my behalf could be incorrect, and we'll have to tune in to find out.

PS: For those coming back and viewing this thread, we still have an active PUG channel to get your UT fix on the IRC server bacon.utassault.net in #utapug, or http://utassault.net/cgiirc

Hi guys,

The director of the Open Tournament initiative claimed yesterday in private (not publicly, emphasis on claim) that they have not been contacted regarding this announcement from Epic.

I know a lot of people out there (named Maxiz) feel really burned by Epic in the past, especially after their announcement in late March that there was no UT planned for UE4, so I think we'll just have to wait and see. From the conversations html and I have had with Epic in the past month they seem a lot less evil and dumb than we perceived them, so I think there's a slim chance that we can hope. Fingers crossed :)

Kaka: I'm not pogo.

What we know right now is that Joe Wilson will be Sr. Programmer, Steve Polge will be project lead, and Flak will be the person in charge of whatever community-driven incentives they have, which is great because she's been super cool with listening to the community lately.

3hrs until announcement.

Quasi, there WILL be Linux, Mac, and Windows!

I hosted a rapid reaction stream on Twitch with a few hundred viewers, you can take the time to check it out at

It looks like there's a BIG presence on their forums promoting UT2k4 environments and physics, so it's important for all UT99 fans to head over to their forums and support a UT99 remake!

Erm is it really $19 pcm to register at the forum?

No. Registration is free, modding before the game is released will be $20. With someone of your proven success I'd hope someone could help donate to you!

It certainly sounds like it could be a true sequel to UT99 with proper assault. Maybe it will be chance for me to play assault again without bots :) since I appear to live on the wrong side of the world to play assault.

Heh I almost feel self conscious only having 2 posts on this forum...

Well I expect (hope) that the git repo is only for native code and that .uc will be available for free. So that won't be too much a pain.

I registered on the forum using my ~V~ nick which is how most people in the coding community know me.

Good to see flak is still around.

As others have pointed out, forums are free, but source access costs. Means the incentive is low for developers like us who won't be making much in the way of money from it... But I guess if people are passionate enough, then it's not a massive amount.

I'd give it a few months to get traction before signing up for developer access tbh.
