Tripwires 'Killing Floor' too for about the first 500 hours
Space Invaders used sound so well to increase tension in the player too, and the same mechanism has been used in practically every game since.

yeah first avp was great back then. The marine campaign on directors cut difficulty (only able to save once per mission) was damn thrilling!

game i played years ago called MYST.
scary cause your travelling around a world and you have no idea what is going on and random things happen sometimes which make you jump. the music is very atmospheric!
