Can any music-makers recommend a decent software synth? I haven't used them before but I'm sure I can figure it out if it has a decent interface. It doesn't need to be anything amazing, I just want to piddle about, making my own tunes and such. Any ideas?

ReBirth and AbSynth are pretty good, although they usually are used in combination with full software suits like Reason, Ableton Live. Especially Ableton Live is nice to get started, very user friendly and lots of possibility's for extensions.
