I see this all over the place and wondered if anyone can explain what it's all about?

Oh, and why we have it in the forums?

It slows web sites down and I doubt it's there for my benefit.

I look at my browser status bar and always see "Waiting for...google analytics" :-/

yeah, if ur on a mozilla browser u can get 'NoScript' to block it. especially ads (google adsense) increase the loading time a lot..

It generates view stats for our website and forums.
It doesn't really slows down websites as long as your connection isn't overloaded and/or your routing to google is really bad or broken.
