I don't see how Murray is arrogant tbh, from his interviews he seems to be amongst the more modest tennis players. Sure he did things when he was young that was a bit silly like taking the piss outta England on the BBC but I couldn't imagine him doing that now.

He's the only chance Scotland or the rest of the UK is going to have to win Wimbledon any time soon so I'm 100% behind him!

Scotland don't have much of a media, but England (BBC) do, which is why foreign countries get a primarily English interpretation of events. And England's opinion of Andy Murray is prolly that he is arrogant, just cos he doesn't have his tongue up their arses like they want. He's trying to make the point that a Scottish player should not have to be blackmailed into representing Great Britain. He should rep the country of his birth. Should Belgian players be forced to represent France at Roland Garros, just cos they're next door and are smaller? I don't see why. And when the English media asks him if he will support the English football team he says what most Scots would say - fuck no. Again, why the hell should he? Scotland have a famous antipathy with England and vice versa, is it so surprising that Murray doesn't like the English football team? Who does? You have no idea how ridiculous it is listening to the English trying to talk up their team, all this football's coming home shit and various dickheads saying it's England's 'right' to win the WC or the EC this year. GET A FUCKING GRIP, YOUR TEAM IS MEDIOCRE. Murray is Scottish, not 'British' or 'nearly English' - people should just accept it.

Murray is Scottish, not 'British'

The British (also known as Britons, informally Brits or archaically Britishers) are citizens of the United Kingdom
Scotland (Gaelic: Alba) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom

Not that I'm bothered what Murray considers himself, he certainly appreciates the "British" crowds' support at Wimbledon anyway.

i kinda agree with both of you 2 on this one... i consider myself English 1st, British 2nd. On that basis, it seems peculiar to me that Murray is branded British in a competition where he is competing for himself, i wonder why this is the case, I would have thought he could play in such competitions as being Scottish if he so chose. Dunno if he can choose, but there we go...

In Davis cup things etc i can understand it as he is part of the British team, and any other competion where he has to be British it makes sense, but when he's playing for himself, i do wonder why he is British rather than Scottish.

P.S. what you say about the English teams (at most "main stream" sports) is fairly true Useless :|

I would have thought the fact theres no such thing as an english, welsh, scottish whatever team in tennis, just like there is no such thing in athletics, Formula1 etc, is why he is called British, he represents Britain because I assume that is the body that governs tennis around here.

As far as antipathy goes, he lives in England and has an English girlfriend, thats not really showing a dislike is it. Fans and media blow everything out of proportion by twisting facts their way just like the media did with the football team comment, im sure he doesnt really care what country people say he is from as long as he gets support when playing.

Whats so hard to understand about the whole 'Footballs coming home' and 'it's England's time' in the next major event? It sells vast amounts of papers, it raises TV audience numbers, readers of The Sun get a hard on for the upcoming World Cup/Euro 20** and it all kicks off. Apathy from the media would never sell papers. Vindaloo! How much money did that shit make? It always has been and always will be about money..

The same applies to Murray - England is shit at tennis, Murray is 'British' so if we all get behind him we can sell more papers, the BBC looks like it's doing a sterling job at harmonising the Britsh Isles and everyone can feel great when Murray gets into the final. T Shirts, mugs, flags and sponsorship deals like that fucking annoying EA one at the moment where he CANNOT BE SERIOUS! while getting controlled by some tit on a Wii..... if he was Scottish would his appeal be big enough to England for the kind of sponsorship he gets to be good value for money ? Probably not. Which just goes to show he's a complete sell out and the anger at him not being portrayed as purely Scottish is misguided

Wow, damn lucky win for Murray over Wawrinka today. If he plays like that vs Roddick or Hewitt in the semis (if he should get that far) he'll be crushed in straight sets.

Sure he does, why shouldn't he appreciate support from any country? I think we all would, but that wouldn't change the country of our birth.

he represents Britain because I assume that is the body that governs tennis around here.

He wasn't given a choice, same goes for all other so-called British players. I'm quite sure that if Tim Henman had ever won it he wouldn't have been up all night thanking god that he managed to do it for those wonderful people from Northern Ireland :whatever:

As far as antipathy goes, he lives in England and has an English girlfriend, thats not really showing a dislike is it.

No, but my comment was that there is a famous antipathy between Scotland and England, so it's not hard for either side to find reasons to dislike each other when they think it necessary. He has a right to think the English football team is shit, and he has a right to rep the country in which he was born. That shouldn't mean that he is automatically ostracised from all things English, that would just be a childish response. Thinking English football is pants and wanting to be considered Scottish does not make a person anti-English, but if the English want to use that as an excuse to dislike him then so be it.

@ CK - cba quoting the whole thing but I find it hard to believe that Andy Murray got to where he is today by being British rather than Scottish. I doubt he's in the quarters right now because of sponsorship deals rather than work, training, experience and sheer effing ability. Yes, courting the 'I'm British' thing will surely make him more money and that could be called selling out, but he wasn't even given the choice of whether or not he wanted to represent Britain, and neither are any other players, English or otherwise. So any player in that situation will end up being called a sell-out, purely because of circumstances that were beyond their control. Is that fair? And show me a sportsman that doesn't want to make more money if at all possible.

Incidentally, he's now in the quarters and facing an unseeded wildcard. Semis here we come

an unseeded wildcard who has been the former worlds no.1
Although a clay specialist J.C.Ferrero is playing class tennis on grass atm so I wouldnt underestimate him. But I'm with you for once anthony ;) Murray will probably win.

Anyway: Go Haas Go!

I didn't question his ability at all - I meant sponsorship as in money. Basically agreeing - tell us English to go fuck ourselves, or just be happy being British and embrace it all. Can't have it both ways, which is why I dislike him so much esp the world cup thingy.

I hope he does win but only cos I don't believe in all this Eng vs Scot shit anyway, I'll always cheer for Scotland if they're playing another country.

Still, if he fails at tennis he could always go into hypnotherapy. With a voice like that he could send anyone to sleep :P

But why, just because he wants to assert his nationality and downplay the all-encompassing greatness of the English football team should that make him anti-English? I think Graham Norton's a little prick but I'm not anti-Irish. Accepting sponsorship deals from companies wanting to trade on his Britishness should not preclude his right to think that certain things about England are annoying and worthless :\

And ye Bas, I know Ferrero was good in the past, but I don't see him having enough in him to beat Murray this time around, even after how tired Murray will be from today's match. I'd be much more worried if Murray was up against Lleyton Hewitt, another former great (and champion) and a player whom I admire almost totally.

There's a clear difference between being unintentionally annoying (and Irish) and going out of your way to antagonise the locals. Especially when its an act like that where obviously some effort has gone into sourcing the item to cause the provokation. I mean, anyone seen a Paraguay shirt at JJB ever? :P But like someone already said, maybe he was just young and immature, I dunno... just an example of him

Of course - he is precluded from nothing other than renouncing his Britishness. And some things, most things, in England are annoying and worthless. :D

At the end of the day he isn't exactly lacking in media platform to air his views if he felt so strongly about them. If he doesn't want to be referred to as a British tennis player then fair play and I would agree with him - but it just seems that as long as the moneys coming in any issues he may or may not have are well and truly under wraps. Which, thinking about it, actually endears him to me in a funny sort of way. If I secretly hated a country but could make millions out of the poor saps who buy into me I'd definitely do it :D

Perhaps if u didn't waste your time watching football games of very little importance you'd know some of the better tennis players in the world :P
